DUBAI — It’s lonely at the top, but Curtis Luck is enjoying a nice view after completing a meteoric rise to the summit of the amateur game in a reflection of his monumental strength and passion to scale the mountains.
Achieving the number one ranking in the world may have brought a sense of accomplishment for Luke, but the 20-year-old Australian prodigy has no illusions about the task that lies ahead as he plans join the paid ranks immediately after the Masters this year.
“Since I started playing at a high level at the age of 14, it’s been a goal to be the world No 1 amateur, so that’s one checked off the list,” said Luck, who earned his Masters invitation courtesy of his 2016 US Amateur and Asia Pacific Amateur victories.
Greatness may have many miles to wind, but Luck is well on the way. The signs were all too visible at the 2017 Omega Dubai Desert Classic where he relished every moment of competing alongside a blockbuster field before emerging as the leading amateur.
‘Made For Greatness’ isn’t just a catchy tagline for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic; it is a collective reflection on the feel-good stories that marked defining moments in the careers of players who since have left their indelible imprints on the golf course.
‘Treat them greatly and they will show themselves great’ has always been the underling theme of the Classic and that’s one big reason why the iconic Dallah, as the Arabian coffee-pot shaped trophy is called, holds a special reverence to golfers, adding credence to assertion that both are Made for Greatness.
That of the 23 different winners from 12 different nations since the first duel for the Dallah began in 1989, seven racked up their maiden European Tour win at the Majlis, pretty much setting in stone their relationship with Dubai.
The illustrious list includes the great Ernie Els,Rory McIlroy and Fred Couples among others, mirroring the Emirate’s dynamic and innovative sporting culture.
And now Luck stands on the threshold of greatness.
Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion. And Luck has it in abundance and so is the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Made for Greatness!
